Unable to link/place psd or tiff files from Photoshop into Illustrator CS4

i'm running cs4 , upgraded imac solid state hd using el capitan os. since upgrade unable link/place .psd , .tiff files photoshop. alert window tells i'm missing proper plug-in. obtain proper plug-in(s)???

this might ruin system.

 

you try , launch photoshop before launch illustrator.
