Kerning two characters affects multiple pairs throughout line of text

hi there,

 

i'm trying kern characters in indesign cc 9.1, , when use either arrow keys or value selector, multiple sets of characters move – not pair cursor inserted. happens both system fonts , purchased fonts, , makes difficult kern well, because 1 pair adjusting want it, pair getting thrown out of whack.

 

i have no idea source of problem is. there way fix this? in advance!

the letters part of string "moves" together.  try kerning left right.  if need type of absolute positioning, might best create outlines , move letters individually.

 

for example, @ text:

 

i helping others.

if remove space between "like" , "helping", remaining letters , spaces right move left.  same rules apply in kerning - in smaller increments.
