Clipping mask not working

all of sudden clipping mask isn't working me! grrrr... added outline stroke 2 black squares, grouped them, selected them plus gold texture, clicked clipping mask, , happened both elements disappeared, black squares still there...i can't see them. dragged squares onto art board , still can't see them. idea what's happening? screenshots attached.

 

i'm stuck! pretty please tell me i'm missing. see pictures attached in email below

if not overlapping, or if overlapping , want hole overlap, select 2 rectangles , object>compound path>make, apply texture.

 

if overlapping , not want hole overlap, select 2 rectangles , pathfinder>unite, apply texture.

 

if abutting, may either.

 

you need 1 path (which may compound clipping path clipping mask.
