Deleting part of image name and changing file extension

i work linked images in low resolution , .jpg extension has following pattern – f000_1ab_cde_fgh_ (description image bank).jpg

i need delimit , delete text of description , replace extension .psd. the description can variable length.

it possible via script delete image description space , add extension?

the final name should – f000_1ab_cde_fgh.psd

that way can automatically exchange images lower high resolution.

even if extension becomes same can relink file extension.
