Help! After opening a .psd in illustrator, il crashes and is no longer able to open .psds.

i have photoshop document few layers of same image have different amounts of "threshold" applied, when coloured differently make multi-layer "posterize" style image.

 

i've done before , it's worked great, no issues.  today after doing it, going fine, used image trace [which have in previous iterations of technique] on top layer , good, worked perfectly, 2nd layer, returned error message of "this operation cannot completed, reason: can't". when "ok" clicked of illustrator crashes. if try , open exact same psd opened in illustrator, returns error "file not readable". able make psd cmyk document , opened again, tried process on , came same errors both times.

i believe it's layer titled "darker" causes error. attempt figure out why - think might border being detailed [but have tracing of entire image, in border traced fine...] mean can use border image if can figure out way of opening psd again.
