Help Cleaning up Vector Black and White Logo - removing hidden vectors?

i've got vector line art problem. received bad, sloppy piece of illustrator art...lots of misaligned strokes , shapes. issue needs cleaned vector-based output hidden mess impacting output. image, below, on color background client approved art as-is, you'll see in hidden line art mode of it's misaligned. i'm looking method clean without tons of hand manipulation. want visible remain vector , have fills disappear , take away overlapping strokes.

 

what's automated way approach this? pathfinder tools? ideas approaching it?

it looks white separate shape, below black line work. place notice duplicate lines.

 

you temporarily hide white shape(s) select black lines , convert "live paint". "filled" "none". triple-clicking area live paint bucket tool fill closed spaces white. fill other colors needed.

 

if you'd rather have separate white shape background can can still use live paint convert simple shape expanding , merging shapes. force outline precisely match overlaying black lines.
