How does one efficiently create a radial symmetrical pattern

i'm creating new logo, , want base on ubuntu logo. http://www.tuxemon.org/images/ubuntu.png

other 3 circles, logo ring in 3 equal parts. imagine each of parts same size. how 1 split circular object each piece equal around shape. know how create ring , how split them up, don't know how in equal size. can figure out straight objects because have rulers work with, i'm not sure how circular objects. there quick way this? using illustrator cs6.

bleduct,

you may (smart guides friends telling when within snapping distance):

1) create stroke/nofill circle corresponding outer edge of circular ring;

2) line segment tool clickdrag centre of 1) anchor point right;

3) effect>distort & transform>transform>rotate 120 degrees 2 copies , leftmost reference point ticked, object>expand appearance, pathfinder unite, set stroke weight gap width , round cap, object>path>outline stroke;

4) select circle 1) , object>path>offset path negative amount corresponding width of ring, select both circles , objct>compound path>make;

5) select , pathfinder>minus front.

presuming creating not infringing copyright of ubuntu logo.
