Index Work-around for Directory

this question requires little background,

i in throws of project creating print directory of high school grads 120 pages @ point. know indexes directories not strength of indesign, it's i've got, figured out work around. i've laid in data have "numbers" spread sheet entered year of graduation. names listed title, first name, second name , contact info, on 1 line. once laid out in indesign, went spread sheet, , edited eliminate fields names , placed last names in first column. opened text-only file in textedit , copied/pasted results onto second layer in indesign. (so have 2 layers, both same names on same page; layer 1 has full name , address, layer 2 has names, last name first.)

 

i made table of contents content on layer 2, sorting alphabetically. table of contents works alphabetical index , delighted own cleverness.

 

but....not fast, gungadin. way things set now, if there editing changes in directory @ point, have scroll through bad-boy 1 page @ time make sure names on layer 1 match on layer 2. not looking forward this.

 

my question this: there way link content layer 1 , layer 2 text flows on 1, flow on 2?
